Martell Valley - Venosta Valley - South Tyrol - Winter Trails

Zufall Peak "Zufallspitze"  3,757m
 

Starting point: Parking area at the end of the valley, 1.5km from the Hotel zum See or the Marteller Hütte mountain hut.

Ascent: Starting from the parking area follow the trail to the Zufallhütte mountain hut which usually is well visible. Proceed on the left side (south west) immediatly after the hut along a path surrounded by rocks until you reach the Plima river and the old dam wall. Proceed west on the plain, then turn left (south) and proceed along the steep hillside until you reach the second reservoir directly below the Fürkeleferner glacier. From here ascend the steep Fürkeleferner glacier until you reach a plain at approximately 3,550m above the sea level. Here you turn left (south) until you can see the south side of the glacier. Proceed on the right along the crest (here you have to carry your skis) until you reach the peak. You should choose this route only if the snowpack and weather conditions are perfect!
   
Descent: Along the route described above, preferably, along the routes described below.
   
Further routes to ascent: Proceed as described above, until you reach a height of approximately 2,800m above the sea level. then proceed on the right along the Zufallferner glacier. After the steep hillside you reach a glacier basin from which you will see the Cevedale. From here you Proceed to the Casati Hütte mountain hut. Proceed along the steep hillside to the saddle between Zufal Peak (Zufallspitze) and the Cevedale. From here you can easily reach the Cevedale, whereas reaching the Zufall Peak takes a little more effort. You have to descent south for approximately 100m to bypass a steep rock spur and the ascend again along the crest which least north east torwards the peak.

Ascent along the "Langferner":
This is a further route on which you can ascend along the "Normalweg" (normal route) near the Casati Hütte mountain hut.
   
Difference in altitude: Starting from the parking area, approximately 1,750m - starting from the Marteller Hütte mountain hut, approximately 1,200m
   
Time: Starting from the Marteller Hütte mountain hut, across the Fürkeleferner glacier: approximately 4 hours.
Starting from the Marteller Hütte mountain hut, across the Zufallferner glacier: approximately 5 hours
   
Tips and difficulties: Be aware of avalanche potential, snowpack conditions and crevasses!
   
   
   

"Köllkuppe" 3,330m
 

Starting point: Parking area at the end of the valley, 1,5km from the Hotel zum See
   
Ascent: Starting from the parking area follow the trail to the Zufallhütte mountain hut which usually is well visible. Proceed on the left side (south west) immediately after the hut along a path surrounded by rocks until you reach the Plima river and the old dam wall. Proceed west on the plain, then turn left (south) and proceed along the steep hillside until you reach the second reservoir directly below the Fünkelferner glacier. Turn right at a height of approximately 2,550m – you will see the Marteller Hütte mountain hut on the left – then proceed in the direction of the Zufallhütte mountain hut. Now turn left and ascend south east along the moderately steep hillside towards the Hohenferner glacier. Proceed south along the glacier and then follow the steep hillside until you reach the peak.

Time: 4.5 hours

Platten Peak "Plattenspitze" 3,422m
 
Starting point: Parking area at the and of the valley, 1,5km from the Hotel zum See
   
Salita: Starting from the parking area, walk back along the street for 50-
100m and then follow the marking along the trail to the Enzian mountain hut which you will soon reach. Proceed north west crossing the pine forest until you reach the timberline. Here the Peder Valley (“Pedertal”) begins and you can see the whole route in front of you. Proceed along the valley floor and then turn left towards the Platten Peak (“Plattenspitze”). You will reach the highest point of the peak from the moderately steep hillside. From here you can enjoy a breath-taking view of the Martell Valley and the Sulden Valley.

Time: 4 hours

The best time for ski touring on this route is during spring.
